Maxwell Castle was built in 1545 but destroyed by the English in 1570. Newark Castle, Port Glasgow was built by the Clan Maxwell in the 15th century. Haggs Castle was owned by the Maxwells from 1585 to 1972. It seems the biggest siege was saved until last, as in 1640 Caerlaverock Castle was destroyed for the final time in the longest battle seen on the grounds.
